Hi,
So this is the thread for complete sentences in English? I am always amazed at how many people use English expressions or terms when the same could be said easily enough in German.

Whatever floats your boat, I guess :-). I' be just bought a Surf for back- country gravel roads and to do a bit of hunting. I have no intention of drowning it in water or mud. However, not all roads here have bridges and must be forded. Sometimes there are slips, decent sized potholes and ruts. While a normal car could probably go most places, it would probably not make it through the Rainbow Road and roads similar to this. Having a bit more ground clearance is nice and the larger tires tend to make for a smoother ride.

So no Gelaende fahren for me and I probably won't need extra lange Federn or a Differentialsperre. I guess I could drive into the dunes and pretend I am in Afrika, but beach sand is bloody salty and I hate rust. I rarely even do it on my bikes.

Living on an island limits where you can go, but at least this one has lots of variety. You guys have a pretty good forum here, so I guess I will stick around for a bit.

Cheers,
Alex

Greetings Kiwi fella :D

I`m not quite sure about the quality of posts regarding hiluxes - I tend to stick to zuks and jeeps, for that I can tell you there won´t be any matter to disappoint you.

Do you have a german background or what made you log on here?

I drove through Waimauku at least once, I think on the way to Muriwai...

NZ was actually my reason to buy a jeep, which then made me log on here :)

Cheers,
Patrick

Hi Patrick,

yep, Waimauku is the gateway to Muriwai and Woodhill. The beach used to be a public road, but due to the actions of a few irresponsible people, you have to enter further up from Muriwai and there is now a speed limit. I've got to say, when I am riding up on my bike, you've got to go fast enough to stay on top of the sand.

Woodhill is even better, there is mountain biking, a motorcycle park and of course a section for off-roaders. I've been on the off-road section once years ago, with a friend who is into Landrovers. He has a couple of series 3 with V8s. I shudder to think what his fuel bill is like.

Not quite 90 mile beach, but it's still about 60km long.

Woodhill is also neat for motorcycles.

We're in the process of moving to Blenheim. That's an even better playground.

Oh, and to answer your question, yes, I grew up in Germany but have lived here since '87.

Cheers,
Alex

Badly modified trucks Ätsch Ätsch

Hopefully a bad translation! Or maybe they are badly modified lol

Welcome to the Forum Smurf. You are not the only English speaker on here (though my written German is going to be a lot worse than yours I fear!)

These things roll past our street every weekend on the way to Woodhill. No doubt, some have been badly modified :-). I am an almost complete novice to off-road driving in a 4x4. So I am not really in a position to comment on anyone's vehicle.

Some of the trucks on this site are really impressive. Also, since the borders have opened, a whole new world seems to have opened to 4x4 enthusiasts. Enjoy it while it lasts. I have been enjoying the reports.

My Surf is still too nice to bang up off-road. I had started looking at some rougher ones, because initially I thought that they would be more usable. But usually neglected vehicles are a pita in the long run, because you're forever fixing up the PO's stuff ups. I am busy enough keeping our three bikes on the road and while I don't mind getting greasy every now and then, I have not intention of spending all my free time in a workshop.

My German might be better than yours, Farmer. But my spelling and grammar are dodgy. Use it or lose it, they say.

I've worked with a Geordie for the past 7 years, so I've learnt to put up with a lot, champion. I've even had to translate occasionally. My Welsh colleague spoke the Queen's English compare to him. So I guess I'll cope.

Cheers,

Alex

Sorry, we got this the wrong way around. I am now permanently based in Blenheim, since the 11th of Jan. Let me know next time you're down here. I am just settling into my new job, so the exploring will have to wait for a while. However, I still managed a quick loop through Taylor Pass and Redwood Pass on my GS on Saturday morning.

Today we had a look down Waihopai Valley. It's a nice little drive, but not very off-roadish. But it's the sort of thing I bought the truck for, that and to tow my garden waste to the tip.

I might as well continue to post here. Not sure if anyone actually bothers to read this, but what the heck.

We went for a drive from Rarangi to Picton on the back road via Port Underwood. Most of it is pretty corrugated and dusty gravel. Some of the bays have a bit of seal to keep the dust down. For years I didn't even realise that this road existed. But some years ago my wife and I went through on our motorbikes. It's definitely recommended.

Sorry about the smudged lens, should have checked it first.

It's not all that special as far was exploring goes. It's only about 40km of gravel and the trip can be done in 20 mins on the main road.

We are probably going to do the Molesworth / Rainbow loop next weekend. That's roughly 200km of gravel and fords pretty much from home.

This is the sort of country you end up going through, but the scenery changes a lot.

I'll post a few bike pics next time I have new ones.

Ok, I can post a few more from last January, but I am looking forward to upcoming rides.

These were from a ride called the Dusty Butt 1000. About 800km of gravel and about 200km sealed. That's over two days of riding.

It was quite tricky in places and the old boxer engine didn't like being under water. I fell in a couple of time as well. It's a lot of fun and you need to be reasonably fit or a pretty good rider. Most people used smaller bikes, but a couple did it on R1150Gs and R1200Gs. It's not what you ride, it's how you ride it :-).
