Seems to be a wonderful ride. Do you have to camp in the wild during this trip, or are there some facilities along the track? | _________________

The ride starts and ends in Fairlie. You spend one night in Alexandra in a motel of your choice. You only need to carry enough equipment for that. I had two ride down from Auckland and return afterwards, so it was another of kilometres in a short time. Now that I am in Blenheim it's not so bad. But there are so many great roads down, here that I won't be bored for many years. After all, we've managed for 27 years in Auckland.

Like I've said, I'll just keep polluting this thread with my ramblings. Yesterday we took the Rainbow Rd to Hanmer Springs and returned the next day via the Molesworth Rd. The Rainbow crosses a private station (large farm) and follows the pylons that transfer the electricity north. From where I live, it's about 90km to get to the entrance of the Rainbow, just before you get to St Arnaud and the Nelson Lakes. From what I have heard, the road was built to service the power lines. It's 112km of gravel and is recommended for 4x4 only. Currently, it's in good condition and a at the entrance has recently be graded. You could probably get a car through, but it won't be quite the same afterwards.
Here are some pictures of the entrance to the Rainbow and the first . It used to have a concrete base, but that got washed out a few years back.
Most of the road is well formed, with the odd to cross. However, there are also a number of slips that are a bit more rugged.
There are lots of gates, remember it's a farm, so you need to have an opener.
Keep an eye out for cattle, fences are optional here.
112km drags on
Lake Tennyson, the start of the mighty Clarence river
They come in all sizes, this size is not to be messed with
Hanmer Springs is down there, via Jollies Pass.
The Rainbow is a toll road, you have to pay $25 to use it. It's only open for a few month during summer. A lot of people on mtbs use it, so you have to be careful. Some of the steep sections have wicked corrugations, down hill they are a pita, because the braking on them, combined with the loose surface gravel on a rock hard surface can make things go pear shaped quickly.
So this was the Rainbow, if there is interest, I'll add the return trip via the Molesworth. The scenery there is probably nicer.

I'm quite interested, and I guess some others too.
Thanks for showing your trip on the Rainbow road.
Where do you pay the toll for the road, is there an office? | _________________

You pay at the Rainbow station house. They take down your details and the details of the vehicle. Motorcycles pay $15, bicycles and trampers pay $2. We had a glorious day, but the weather can change quite quickly and dramatically, so you have to be prepared. It can snow in the middle of summer. The fords barely had any water in them, but when it rains properly they are a raging torrent. I prefer slightly less adventure, so we timed it with the weather forecast.

We only spent the night in Hanmer Springs. Its a nice and clean town famous for it's hot springs. They also have a ski field up in the mountains.
We went back up Jollies Pass and turned right onto to the Molesworth. Since it was only 9am at this stage, we pretty much had the road to ourselves until just before lunch time, when we started getting some traffic coming the other way.
Cattle on the road
The scenery keeps changing
Some free roaming horses
The famous cob cottage
This is also a camping area. The cottage is just over the hill from Molesworth station. This station is managed by The Department of Conservation know as DOC. It's owned by the people of New Zealand.
The Molesworth station, it's a small village and not open to the public
More beef on the road
I guess that's where I've stopped taking photos. It's a long drive, 5-6 hours of concentration, but you start to hit seal about 80-90km after the cob cottage. The Awatere Valley opens up and the first few vineyards start appearing. You have the option of entering Blenheim via Taylor Pass, or carry on to the Sate Highway 1 and the Weld Pass. Awatere Valley is absolutely beautiful.
I guess that was it. My R80GS Basic is about to turn up in a few minutes, so the next report will be on the bike. Hope you guys enjoyed the pictures.

Really appreciate this ! I was destined to move to New Zealand when I was about 22 years old, then I met my first wife, bought a house, had kids and all the rest....
Still regret not seeing the world first although I've been around.
Bring on the bike I'd say !

I went for a short ride this evening, since the R80GS back it was time to use it again. The Wairau river bed is a neat place for having a play. Unfortunately, the push rod tube seals have decided to leak again. I then took the long way home via the Taumarina road. It follows the river and has a short gravel section. Just the ride sort of ride to finish off a busy day.

Very nice ! And an even nicer bike
Not much unpaved roads here but I do my best to find them. (Mostly in the neighbouring Flatlands)
My wife on her Dakar 650.
It's good to ride !

Nice Xcountry, at least I am assuming it's one. We're in a river valley, so it's pretty flat around here, too. But the mountains are just in the background, quite tall ones, too. We also have an active vault line, for a bit of excitement every now and then. Thankfully, offroad riding around here is plentiful. If I only had more time.

I can see why you are riding up a creek instead :-). This sort of riding is beyond me, at least with the type of bikes I have. I'd love to get a trail bike, but I have more toys than I can afford. Excuse me while I go out for another ride. It's a stunning day and while I've just done the Queen Charlotte Drive from Picton to Havelock, I want to take the R80 out again.
